Smile Business Models - May 30th, 2007, 05:21 PM

Many HEAL projects and other HIT/HIE projects are grappling with questions of how to develop their business models and sustain their initiatives in the long term. What business models are currently in use, what models might work in the NYS environment, and how can successful models be built?

Today the eHealth Initiative Foundation released its Value and Sustainability Model (VSM). The eHI Value and Sustainability Model and tools are designed to assist communities in conceptualizing and developing sustainable HIE initiatives.

Seems to me that my medical history is as sensitive, valuable and personal to me as my credit history. TransUnion, Experian and Equifax all seem to have carved a great business model out of credit history, plenty of companies make great money helping consumers manage their history.

I think I need better access to my medical history than I currently have with my credit history, my credit history is curiously not mine to monitor freely, outside of a very recent law allowing me to get my record once a year I would have to pay for access.

Nonetheless, credit history as a managed information model has a bunch of shining examples and glaring errors to learn from, including a very accepting public that is constantly being asked to allow access to their record for various transactions. Ever read the small print on a credit card application? There's a line right there that authorises the company to check your information, no different than a HIPAA sign-off or informed consent.

By giving quality works and good marketing and some live example also works behind.

What you think for that.
