Laura Moss just saying hi! I was actually logging on to follow up on a statement made during the September '06 Immunization Updates Comference Call; that it was unsure whether written consent for immunizations was needed for LTC. The speaker said that the issue would be clarified with NYSDOH & posted on the jeny site. Has anyone found it? Thanks.

Hi Laura-
The Greater New York Hospital Association and IPRO have submitted a long list of questions, including yours, to the Department of Health for clarification. We will post their official responses as soon as we get them.
Please stay tuned...

Hi Laura,
In our facility we added a signature line to the VIS- Vacine Information Statement- that either the resident signs/ approves by nodding or their designated rep approves by signing/ or via phone.
This is the manner we chose to ensure compliance to the standard on Flu/ Pneumovax.

I have attached correspondence from the NYS DOH dated November 2, 2006 pertaining to the new requirements for the immunization of hospital inpatients 65 years of age or older against influenza and pneumococcal disease. The law applies to hospital inpatients and as such would not mandate a similar program for hospital outpatients whose length of stay at the facility is less than 24 hours.
The law authorizes hospitals to implement a non-patient specific standing order policy for eligible patients in accordance with the immunization policy approved by the hospital. Provisions for ensuring that, in accordance with the New York State Education Department (NYSED) nursing practice regulations (http://www.op.nysed.gov/immunguide.htm), written consent is obtained whenever vaccination is administered utilizing non-patient specific orders. A sample consent form is a part of the attached document.
