On February 25th, one of IPRO's DOQ-IT participants a little known, young physician, working in one of the most depressed areas of the Bronx, Dr. Sumir Sahgal was recognized by Mayor Bloomberg and the NYC DOH for his quixotic HIT adoption efforts. Among the attendees were Farzad Mostashari, MD, MSPH Assistant Commissioner and Chair, Primary Care Information Taskforce Epidemiology Services New York City Department of Health, Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, Health Commissioner, NYS Health Commissioner Richard Daines, MD, was also in attendance along with Mat Kendall, Director of the Primary Care Information Project, and another of our DOQ-IT practices Dr. Sal Volpe, now a clinical consultant for the NYC DOH eCW implementations.

In his speech, Dr. Saghal shared "real life" experiences, though he has only been "live" with the system for three months, he has already experienced a a situation with a patient who became very ill during non-office hours and how he was able to access the patients records remotely and take an active role in the emergency treatment of the patient.

Dr. Sahgal also identified that financially adoption has been a huge challenge, he said that he had to "bite the bullet" and invest the money, but he realizes that it will pay itself off by streamlining his practice and giving him 24/7 access to his patient information. He also identified that there is a huge change in the way he writes his notes and how he has to think a little differently now while he is treating his patients. Dr. Sahgal believes that using an Electronic health record with Decision Support will assist him in delivering higher quality care to the population he serves.

Dr. Sahgal is the Immediate Past Chair of MSSNY's Young Physicians Section, and the Secretary of the Bronx County Medical Society. Dr. Sahgal is an active participant in the DOQ-IT project. He credits the project for getting him involved with the DOH project and appreciates our efforts and support.

We all know there are challenges and significant barriers with implementing electronic health records, but this physician will overcome all of those challenges and make IT happen!
